Some Interesting Possibilities For Your Next Movie Downloads
by Timothy Stark on Mar.06, 2010, under Uncategorized
With the thousands of films released in the past hundred years, deciding on movie downloads can be quite a chore. Newer releases quickly dominate older films. But there are still many classics that are worth a second or third look, or in some cases, a first look.
Possibly the best movie ever made about the Titanic is the 1958 film, “A Night to Remember”. This British production featured a huge cast, including David McCallum, Kenneth Moore, and Honor Blackman. Many survivors, both passengers and crew members, were interviewed in the process of writing this story. This added much detail and factual data missing from other films about the sinking.
Among the many films that John Wayne appeared in, some were bad, some mediocre, and some were excellent. In the latter category is “Stagecoach”, which really launched his career. Better performances are often considered to have been “The Quiet Man”, “The Shootist”, “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”, “The Sands of Iwo Jima” and “The Searchers”. His 1954 movie, “The High and the Mighty” is one that was seldom shown for several decades. It is set aboard a flight from Hawaii bound for California that encounters problems halfway there. It was the original disaster type film and offered a large ensemble cast.
If you are looking for a romantic comedy, “Pride and Prejudice” is an excellent choice. This 1940 offering stars Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier in an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel. “The Philadelphia Story” from the same year featured Katherine Hepburn as a socialite on the eve of her second wedding. Cary Grant played her ex-husband, and Jimmy Stewart was the tabloid reporter who was there to exploit the ceremony.
If horror is your preference, the 1973 film, “The Legend of Hell House” stars Roddy McDowell as a medium who returns to the house that almost took his life. And of course, “The Exorcist” and “Poltergeist” have stood the test of time and remain classics.
Two films that many have not seen are “The Gods Must Be Crazy” and “55 Days at Peking”. The first relates the story of a Bushmen making a journey to throw a bottle off the edge of the world. The bottle, thought to be a gift from the gods when it was dropped from an airplane, has caused nothing but trouble for the tribe. As he attempts to carry out his mission, he encounters some bizarre characters along the way. The second film is about a siege in the capital of China. The delegations of all foreign nations were surrounded and attacked in the Boxer Rebellion. The movie stars Charlton Heston, David Niven, and Ava Gardner.
Mystery fans might like “Witness for the Prosecution”, “Rebecca”, “Murder on the Orient Express” or “Death on the Nile”. Or if you are looking for an old slapstick comedy, consider “Road to Utopia” with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Abbott and Costello in “Hold That Ghost”, or “Bringing up Baby” with Cary Grant.
Other worthy titles include “Ice Station Zebra”, “Damn the Defiant!”, “Pork Chop Hill”, “Marty” and “Command Decision”. Once you start looking, however, you will no doubt find that there are thousands more which are as good or better.
