Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole of HawaiI was born on March 26, 1871 and dies on January 1, 1922. He was the reigning prince when Hawaii was overthrown by the American residents in 1893. In the Hawaiian nobility in the late nineteenth century Kalanianaole was considered as one of the important members.
After he was thrown into prison around 1895 for his participation of rebellion against the Republic of Hawaii, he and his wife traveled around Europe and Africa. He was treated as a visiting royal on these travels. After a few years he returned from his self-imposed exile.
Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole joined the Democratic Party when he returned to Hawaii. He did not stay long with the Democratic Party because he was disillusioned on how the Party was not aggressive enough in fighting for the Hawaiian Independence. He then transferred to the Republic Party where he was offered a strong leadership position. This position gave him the chance to join the U.S. Congress.
While Prince Jonah Khi Kalanianaole was with the U.S. Congress it was the time where he made his greatest contribution. This notable achievement was the creation of Hawaiian Homes Commission Act which was signed by President Warren Harding.
